Actresses demand action against those responsible for creating and disseminating deepfake videos
Indian media has raised concerns about the widespread circulation of deepfake videos featuring renowned Bollywood actresses like Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, and Priyanka Chopra.
These AI-generated fake videos are triggering criticism from fans, who are also calling out celebrities for the inappropriate content surfacing online.
Priyanka Chopra recently became a target of these fake videos, where her voice was manipulated to promote a specific brand and disclose her annual income. Similarly, actress Rashmika Mandana faced a fake video scenario, clarifying via Instagram that an edited video, portraying her in a tight dress, was not authentic but altered with someone else's face.
Expressing distress over the misuse of such fake videos, actresses have demanded action against those responsible for creating and disseminating them, aiming to protect women from unwarranted harassment.
Even Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan weighed in on the issue, emphasizing the need for action against the creators of deepfake videos. Alia Bhatt and other actresses also had fake videos circulating, leading to widespread criticism and subsequent clarifications from journalists and fact-checkers, highlighting the videos' inauthenticity.
While Katrina Kaif and Kajol faced similar incidents, they remained silent amidst the viral fake videos. In response to these concerning developments, the Indian government has issued advisories for social media platforms, warning of legal repercussions and fines for those propagating deepfake or immoral videos.
India’s Information Technology Minister underscored the dangers of misinformation and the potential harm posed by such deceptive videos, urging vigilance and stringent action against their creators and distributors.
